ISTA Project 3J Package Testing
ISTA Project 3J is a simulation test designed to protect packaged-products throughout their journey from the manufacturer to consumer. Often, packaged-products are shipped from the manufacturer to one or more distribution centers before eventually landing on the shelves at Club Stores. Project 3J ensures packages remain protected throughout the entire process while being passed along by sea containers, fork lifts, clamps, trucks, etc.
Manufacturers who embrace ISTA Project 3J as a testing guideline will experience many benefits, including better customer experiences for retail shoppers and fewer returned products.
Depending on the packaged-products being shipped, there are specific test requirements to become ISTA Project 3J certified. Manufacturers that work with Compadre’s ISTA-certified testing laboratory enjoy unique peace of mind: our trained, certified and knowledgeable packaging professionals are passionate about providing accurate testing performed on properly calibrated, maintained and operated equipment.
In addition, Compadre will test, engineer and design castings to guarantee product sustainability through every stage of the shipment process. By meeting the stringent regulations, Compadre can reduce damage and loss, providing customers certainty in their product launch. Compadre even offers a design after failure option if your package does not pass.
Benefits of 3J
ISTA Project 3J was developed by industry professionals to help drive out inefficiencies commonly experienced in US Club Stores. Becoming ISTA 3J certified means eliminating these inefficiencies, reducing damage and loss, while providing manufacturers peace of mind during a new product launch.
In addition, manufacturers who abide by the ISTA 3J standards will enjoy the highest quality packaging solutions – improving transport safety and customer experience.
Test Requirements and Components
ISTA Project 3J provides guidelines to create a test protocol sequence for specific shipping and logistics environments. Project 3J is divided into three categories based on the packaged-product type and pallet configuration:
Non-Perishable; Initially Shipped on Standard or Custom Pallet
- This test is for packages not affected by extreme temperatures and where the palletized load is either standard or custom.
Non-Perishable; Initially Shipped Floor Load
- This test is for packages not affected by extreme temperatures and that are floor loaded into a transport vehicle or ocean container on a standard pallet or an elongated and flat packaged-product.
Perishables; Initially Shipped Palletized
- This test is for packaged product affected by extreme high or low temperatures or humidity loaded on a standard pallet.
Depending on the specifications of the packaged-product, one or more of the following tests will need to be completed to become ISTA Project 3J certified.
- Atmospheric Preconditioning
- Atmospheric Conditioning: Temperature and Humidity
- Compression: Vertical
- Compression: Horizontal (Clamping Simulation)
- Handling: Forklift Flat Push (Custom Pallet)
- Shock: Inclined Impact
- Shock: Rotational Edge Drop
- Shock: Concentrated Edge Impact
- Shock: Concentrated Bridged Impact
- Shock: Free Fall Drop
- Shock: Rotational Edge Drop
- Vibration: Vertical (Vertical Stacked)
- Vibration: Vertical Random
- Vibration: Vertical Random with Top Load
